The International Surfing Association (ISA), the surfing world’s governing authority recognized by the International Olympic Committee is proud to welcome India to its list of member nations.
Located in South Asia, India is the seventh-largest country in the world by geographical area and the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west, Bhutan, the People’s Republic of China and Nepal to the northeast, and Bangladesh and Burma to the east.
India’s coast is 7,517 kilometers (4,700 mi) long. Of this distance, 5,423 kilometers (3,400 mi) belong to peninsular India, and 2,094 kilometers (1,300 mi) to the Andaman, Nicobar, and Lakshadweep Islands.
Surfing India Association (SIA), led by President Kishore Kumar, has been a part of the growing trend of the sport of surfing since 2006 and is now the country’s National Governing Body (NGB) of the sport.
“Surfing India Association is really proud to have become the National Governing Body for surfing in India,” said Kumar. “We are also happy because now we are moving towards having India represented at international events. This opens a wide variety of opportunities for our association and for all the surfers in India.”
President Kumar continued, “Our future plans include gathering sponsors for our association and increasing the number of surfers in the country. We will hold national competitions and select the surfing team that will represent our country in the ISA World Championships. Lastly, we want to help the ISA to get surfing into the Olympics.”
Fernando Aguerre, President of the ISA, said about the newest member, “Surfing offers a great opportunity for India’s youth to participate in an outdoor, healthy, athletic activity for fun and for sports competition. Surfing also brings a lifestyle and culture, which can help unite India’s youth. Welcome, India! We are looking forward to seeing you in the ISA World Championships.”
The main surfing zones in India are Mangalore (Karnataka), Kovalam (Kerala), Varkla (Kerala), Pondycheary (Tamilnadu), Mahabalipuram (Tamilnadu), Vizag (Andra Pradesh), Puri (Orissa) and Butlers Bay (Andaman Islands).
